HISTORY! HOW WE EVOLVED
The Internet as we know it has been around since the late 1970’s in one form or another. In it’s infancy it was set up as a way to communicate computer to computer across great distances and receive or send specifically formatted content. Although the first send and receives were of a personal nature, very quickly you could check the stock market, sports scores and businesses transferred store sales figures to corporate offices on a daily basis. The first major impact on this system came when a division of IBM what we now know as Microsoft set out to standardize the computer industry making compatibility between brands of computers an eventual reality. This increased the use of the Internet exponentially as sub groups of computer brand users could virtually communicate with any other brand/group. The next change was and is an ongoing evolution in which speed and volume of information are the primary issues. It’s these issues that pose the question “When do you get involved with the Internet in a real and committed way?” Since the technology has now stabilized and standards are set, the answer is probably hidden in the question: “Lead or Follow?”
WE THE USER
What used to be the primary use of business to business sharing of information has now moved down the list and has been surpassed by personal use to communicate and gather knowledge. We send letters and pictures of loved ones through E-mail, check the weather and stock market, find the financial information about the best rates, and yes we shop. Corporate America that once embraced the idea of “advertising” on the Internet while fighting the idea of selling has now come full circle to realize the Internet of today is just a way to inexpensively distribute the exotic catalog of yesterday and we all know what companies like Sears and Roebuck did with catalog shopping. Just two years ago companies like Sears, Home Depot and Best Buy used their web sites to “advertise” and to help you find one of their local stores. Today their web sites are shopping sites. You can buy online with home delivery, or better yet, buy on line and pick up at a store near you. Financial organizations are doing the same thing. They advertise on TV, they sell on-line! Ask yourself, where do you get airline tickets or hotel rooms? Do you still have a Rolodex for business contacts or do you have an address book on your computer or PDA? Your cell phone probably has Internet access or it will!
THE VISION: SHOP YOUR CHAMBER.COM
The vision is to take a trusted organization, The United States Chambers of Commerce, combine the power of membership with diversity of products, and spread the cost to create a selling and business network system that would be cost prohibitive for an individual entity or group. Build a system that displays the location of virtually any product or service that a shopper could want. Make the system intelligent enough to recognize any search request by the shopper, to help them find that special product or service. Augment that system with the ability to make purchases, set appointments, or make reservations on-line. Create one portal to act as an entrance to all products and services. Then catalog the products and services and add shopping on line with delivery by mail, or pickup at a business location. Add the ability to change content by the individual business owner to display product and service changes on a real time basis with “user friendly” editable pages of information. The professional will be able to communicate with clients and colleagues like never before, with “networking” on a whole new level. No more slow alphabetical listing of businesses, products or services. Point, click and find!
